This fall, The Uprise Experience: Houston Black Theatre Week will showcase one of its most anticipated productions yet — Julian Austin Presents: Odessa’s Cajun Cabaret. Playing for two special performances at the historic Deluxe Theatre on Friday, October 24, 2025 and Saturday, October 25, 2025, this vibrant work promises music, soul, and storytelling that will transport audiences straight into the heart of Southern culture.

Odessa’s Cajun Cabaret is more than a show — it’s an experience. Rich with music, emotion, and the warmth of Cajun heritage, the production weaves a heartfelt narrative about family, community, and resilience. With a blend of humor, passion, and powerful performances, the show celebrates the spirit of the South while exploring themes that resonate across generations.

At the helm of this production is Julian Austin, a Houston native whose passion for storytelling began at just seven years old. After years of honing his craft in Dallas, TX, he returns home to lead a new era of bold, culturally resonant theatre.

Julian’s journey as an actor, writer, and director spans more than a decade, with credits that include Black Boys Cry (1989 Dreams Productions), Kila'Delphia, Every Rose Has Its Thorns, Chicken N’ Biscuits, Sleeping with the Enemy, Rumors, Watch Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Soul Purpose, and more. His directorial debut came while attending Sam Houston State University with the original production The Black Museum: A Black History Showcase, setting the tone for a career dedicated to telling meaningful, impactful stories.

In addition to his theatre work, Julian recently added “author” to his list of accomplishments with the release of his inspiring new book, Dream Heavy: Born to Dream, Built to Handle It — a reflection of his own resilience, ambition, and belief in the power of dreams.

As part of The Uprise Experience: Houston Black Theatre Week, Odessa’s Cajun Cabaret joins a lineup designed to honor the past while shaping the future of Black culture. This marks the debut production of Julian’s company in Houston after building a reputation for bold, original work in Dallas.

With its mix of heartfelt storytelling, dynamic performances, and cultural authenticity, this production is set to be a standout moment in the festival — and a homecoming performance for a Houston artist whose work continues to inspire and uplift.
