INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS

The first annual Houston Black Theatre Week production is looking for shows! Taking place September 18th-October 1st, 2023 at the historic Deluxe Theatre in Fifth Ward Houston, TX. This 2 week play festival will feature works from independent producers and their companies. Scroll down for information on how to submit for consideration.

PRODUCER QAULIFICATIONS

1. Projects must be created by or about people of African descent. All projects submitted must have at least one or all of the above-the-line crew members (writer, director, producer or actors) be of African descent
2. Submitted scripts must be full length, 2 act, complete and ready for readings, workshops and/or productions. Scripts can be new or previously produced works. 
3. Producer must be or have the written consent of the sole author of the project submitted. In addition, must have full underlying rights clearances for any pre-existing material used (music, source material, etc.) in the script
4. Project should fit into one or more genre: Children's Show, Gospel, Historical, Comedy, Drama, Romantic, Dance Theatre, or Social Justice. Other genres are accepted as a sub-genre
5. All projects must be submitted in English
6. Script should be limited to 8 actors (no limit on characters)
7. Project must run no longer than 90 minutes long on stage and must not be a musical
8. Project must be written and formatted for stage. Screenplays will not be accepted
9. Entry does not guarantee acceptance into the festival. Submissions WILL NOT be returned. 
10. Producer, if selected, will cast, rehearse, and produce full production for festival. In addition, if selected, producer will be responsible for all cost related to production with the exclusion of venue, tech, and marketing. Along with being ready for readings, workshops and/or productions at the time of submission and available for performance in September 2023 at the Festival.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1. Selected works will be invited to perform 2 showings of their production during Houston Black Theatre Week.
2. Selected works will receive 80% of all Box Office for their production's showing.
3. Selected works will be featured in Houston Black Theatre Week local and National marketing campaigns. 
4. Works must be submitted by 11:59 PM CST Friday, February 10th, 2023.
5. Application fee of $10 must be paid for each script submitted. *Waiver available but not guaranteed*
6. Shows with images or video of submitted or previous projects will be given priority but is not required for submission. 
7. The full script and excerpt must include: Title page (which should only have the title on it and absolutely no other information), brief synopsis (100 words or less), character breakdown (1 page or less), numbered pages, and t​he complete script (all scenes, songs and lyrics are on the page)
